POSITION SUMMARY
Surgical Technicians will function as a member of the surgical team under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.  Assist the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.  Ensure operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure.  Monitor PAR levels of all surgical instruments and supplies.  Clean and sterilize all surgical instruments.  Perform other duties as directed by the Manager of Surgical Services. Applicants must have academic and clinical training from an accredited Surgical Technician Program. 

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Interacts professionally with patient and family.
  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for treatment.
  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure. Able to gown and glove self and others.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and Surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
  • Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning duties and tasks.  Maintains cleaning and task log books.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Participates in evaluation of new supplies and/or equipment.
  • Utilizes and maintains Surgeon’s Preference Sheets to prepare for surgical cases.
  • Protects patients’ sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.  Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN or Nurse Manager.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
  • Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set up.
  • Anticipates needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies when necessary, and organizes effectively for end-of-case clean up.
  • Is fully responsible for care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follows written procedures for steam sterilization, SterradNX, Medivator Ultrasonic Cavitator, and the Washer Disinfectors; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Consults with other staff members, when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.
  • Regularly collaborates with other members of the nursing team, in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Abides by current standards, policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with co-workers for the patient’s benefit.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure.
  • Able to take call duty as assigned.
  • Takes case assignments as directed by Surgical Services Manager or RN in Charge.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.
  • Attends 80% of staff meetings and reads managers meeting minutes.
  • Compliant with TJC, OSHA, CMS, and State requirements.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health rules and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education
  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Operating Room Technician Certification Required.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Sterile Processing Certification Required.

Experience:
  • One year of work experience in the operating room preferred.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Requires long periods of standing at times.
  • Requires quick movement, agility and fast response time.
  • Requires direct patient contact with potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
  • Frequent lifting and/or handling of light weight items up to 35 pounds.
  • Frequent repositioning of patients.
  • Ability to perform CPR – a strenuous activity.
  • Must be in good physical and mental health, and able to perform under pressure.
