POSITION SUMMARY
A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Tech) is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional who provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is also responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The Sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations as ordered by the provider.
  • Perform biopsies and procedures, such as, paracentesis.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images.
  • Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate abnormal findings to the Radiologist and ordering provider.
  • Obtain patient identifiers, medical history and lab work prior to scanning patient to adapt sonographic examination as necessary and communicate findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Coordinates work schedule with Departmental Director and/or scheduling desk to assure workload coverage.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the sonographer’s care.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory.
  • Prepares preliminary reports in PACS and contacts referring physicians when required.
  • Addresses problems of patient care as they arise and makes decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
  • Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
  • Monitor PACS, hold, fix and unread lists to ensure studies are being read in a timely manner.
  • Reports equipment failures to the appropriate supervisor or staff member
  • Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations
  • Practices methods to ensure good rapport and cooperative working relationships with all members of the Diagnostic Imaging department, physicians, and all other employees of Rochelle Community Hospital.
  • Continuously identifies processes to improve and participate in team activities when requested.  May also be responsible for specific performance improvement and quality control areas designated by manager.
  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.
  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health rules and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.
  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.
  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.
  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Certification:
  • Satisfactory completion of formal Radiologic technology training in an AMA-approved school and ability to meet requirements for registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and/or Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT)
  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) preferred
  • Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate
  • Current BLS

Work Environment/Physical Demands 
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work and complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to blood, blood-borne pathogens, and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Job may require potential exposure to chemical/hazardous materials.
  • Requires potential for exposure to an environmental hazard of radiation.
  • Must be able to push pull or lift 50 lbs. and up to 100 lbs. on occasion.  Moving equipment and patients weighing 125lbs or more from wheelchair and stretchers. Pushing wheelchairs and stretchers from waiting area to procedure rooms.
  • Standing/walking for long periods of time in patient areas and during equipment operation. .
  • Sitting for extended periods of time when displaying and recording images.
