Job Description

Job Summary:

Provides assistance to the Gastro Intestinal (GI) team for the care and diagnosis of patients during GI tests and procedures. Assists in the orientation process of all new GI staff as assigned. Understands and integrates into the delivery of patient care the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients in regards to their growth and development process.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs technical skill duties in all GI tests and procedures ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards and procedures.

  • Provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling and techniques of specialty instrumentation.

  • Assists the registered professional nurse/physician during the GI tests/procedures when needed.

  • Meets with patient and parents to explain GI testing procedures and to allay fears and anxieties associated with the equipment and testing.

  • Prepares equipment and supplies for breath tests, pH probes (Bravo, Impedance) motility studies, pill cams.

  • Tests and calibrates all equipment to be used during the GI procedures to ensure accurate functioning.

  • Assists the RN/MD in research studies and testing of new equipment.

  • Conducts and/or participates in formal in-service programs regarding the care of the GI patient. Educates patients and their families in various testing and treatment methods.

  • Collects, documents, and reports specific data to appropriate RN/MD.

  • Fills out appropriate paperwork to assure accurate hospital and physician billing.

  • Tracks and orders disposable and reusable inventory necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Procedure Suite.

  • Participates in the orientation of all new personnel as assigned. Participates in staff development through in-service education programs, conference and research projects.

  • Develops or individualizes teaching plans/protocols to meet patient and family learning needs. Identifies patient preferences and needs. Evaluates and documents procedures as required.

  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences preferred.

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Gastro Intestinal (GI) Technician or Procedural Technician preferred.

  • Prior experience in a pediatrics setting preferred.

  • Ability to safely immobilize children if necessary.

  • Ability to move equipment and patients.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Ability to work with a well diverse patient and clinical population.

Education

High School Diploma/GED (Required)
